The project focuses on raising awareness and promoting the conservation of sharks and rays (elasmobranchs) in Kilifi County.
Mariners for Action (MFA) actively engages students from fishing families, fishermen, and youth groups to emphasize the vital role of elasmobranchs in maintaining marine biodiversity and ecosystem balance.
Through a series of educational activities, participants are introduced to sustainable fishing practices and the ecological importance of conserving these species.
Over the last quarter of 2024, MFA successfully conducted 14 awareness sessions across seven Beach Management Units (BMUs) in Gongoni, Marereni, Ngomeni, Kichwa Cha Kati, Shella, Mtwapa, and Kilifi Central, directly engaging over 200 fishermen. These sessions provided a platform for fishermen to share their indigenous knowledge while learning about conservation strategies.
The student program focused on Ngala Primary School, Bahari Primary School, and Morning Glow Primary School, reaching a total of 300 students through 12 cumulative sessions.
The program aimed to inspire young learners to appreciate marine life, adopt conservation practices, and understand the critical role elasmobranchs play in the health of marine ecosystems.
