Plastic Waste Management

MFA’s Marine Plastic Waste Management Program, supported by SEE Turtles, focuses on reducing plastic waste in the ocean through a comprehensive approach. The program includes collecting plastics from homesteads and conducting weekly beach cleanups to prevent waste from reaching marine environments.

To further address plastic pollution, the project has established 15 aggregation points in Marereni, Kinyaule, Matsangoni, Kibokoni, Moriani, Mtwapa Maweni, and Kibaoni. These points facilitate the community collection of plastics, which are then linked to recycling firms for purchase. This initiative not only provides an alternative income stream for community members but also significantly contributes to marine biodiversity preservation.

Since February 2024, the program has cumulatively collected and recycled 13.5 tonnes of plastic, showcasing the tangible impact of these efforts on reducing marine pollution and promoting sustainability.

This program is implemented in collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service Malindi and Mombasa Marine Parks, leveraging their expertise and resources to enhance the program’s reach and effectiveness.

Additionally, women from local communities are trained to repurpose marine litter into useful products, such as upcycled items that can be sold to tourists and local markets. This training empowers women economically while fostering a culture of environmental stewardship within the community.
