The work of our mangrove restoration group in Magarini, Kinyaule Village in Kilifi County is grounded in consistency, technical understanding, and community commitment. Over the past several months, we have undertaken a structured restoration process that begins with the sourcing of viable propagules and extends through to nursery establishment, site selection, planting, and post-planting monitoring.
Our approach to restoration is informed by ecological considerations. Site mapping and selection are carried out based on suitability factors such as tidal influence, sediment conditions, and species compatibility. This ensures that planted mangroves have the highest possible survival and growth rates. Once established, our nurseries are carefully managed to produce healthy, high-quality saplings ready for transplantation into degraded coastal areas.
Beyond restoration, we play an active role in safeguarding existing mangrove ecosystems. Through community surveillance, we monitor and respond to potential threats while also engaging local stakeholders through awareness sessions that emphasize the ecological importance of mangroves. These ecosystems provide critical services, including shoreline stabilization, carbon sequestration, and habitat provision for diverse marine and coastal species.
A key strength of this initiative lies in its integration of environmental restoration with sustainable livelihoods. By raising and selling mangrove saplings, we are creating a reliable income stream for community members directly involved in conservation activities. This model ensures that restoration efforts are not only environmentally impactful but also economically viable at the local level.
Supported by the UNESCO x Nestlé Global Youth Grant Scheme, the initiative is already delivering measurable outcomes in both ecosystem recovery and community empowerment.
We are currently seeking to partner with corporates, organizations, and institutions interested in contributing to practical, nature-based solutions. Through the purchase of mangrove saplings ready for planting, partners directly support community incomes while sustaining ongoing nursery operations, continuous planting, monitoring, and forest protection efforts.
