About

Our Story

Mariners for Action (MFA) is a Kenyan nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving marine and coastal ecosystems while promoting sustainable livelihoods and inclusive economic development. We implement integrated programmes in marine biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, marine waste management, environmental education, scientific research, and sustainable blue economy development. Through youth entrepreneurship, innovation, digital skills development, and enterprise support, we empower communities, particularly young people, to create sustainable livelihoods, protect natural resources, and drive locally led solutions that strengthen both people and the environment.

Our Vision

We envision thriving marine ecosystems along the coast of Kenya, where local communities actively engage in conservation efforts and benefit from sustainable practices. Our goal is to foster a future where biodiversity flourishes, resources are managed sustainably, and the ocean remains balanced and healthy for generations to come. Through collaboration and innovation, we aim to empower coastal communities to contribute meaningfully to conservation initiatives and embrace sustainable livelihoods within Kenya’s blue economy

Our Values

Mariners for Action is built on a foundation of shared values that guide our work and partnerships:

  1. Biodiversity Preservation: We are committed to protecting and restoring marine biodiversity along the Kenyan coast and its unique ecosystems.
  2. Economic Empowerment: By promoting sustainable livelihoods, we support coastal communities in reducing dependence on exploitative practices and building resilient futures.
  3. Community-Centered Conservation: We prioritize the involvement of coastal communities, ensuring that conservation efforts are inclusive, collaborative, and aligned with their unique cultural and ecological needs.
  4. Collaboration and Partnerships: We foster strategic partnerships with local organizations, government bodies, and stakeholders along the Kenyan coast to strengthen collective action and drive sustainable change.

Our strategic focus
Mariners for Action advances integrated, community-led solutions that address the interconnected challenges facing Kenya’s coastal and marine ecosystems. Our work focuses on conserving marine biodiversity, restoring critical coastal habitats such as mangrove forests, reducing marine pollution through circular economy and waste management initiatives, strengthening climate resilience, and promoting sustainable blue economy livelihoods.
We invest in youth innovation, entrepreneurship, and technical skills development to empower the next generation of environmental leaders and changemakers. Across all our programmes, we combine scientific knowledge, local participation, strategic partnerships, and innovation to deliver lasting environmental, social, and economic impact for coastal communities.

Theory of Change
We create lasting change by addressing the root causes of environmental degradation and socioeconomic vulnerability through integrated, community-led solutions. By combining conservation, scientific research, ecosystem restoration, skills development, entrepreneurship, and strategic partnerships, we empower coastal communities to sustainably manage marine and coastal resources while creating resilient livelihoods. Our approach strengthens local capacity, promotes innovation, and fosters shared responsibility among communities, government, academia, and the private sector, ensuring that conservation efforts deliver measurable environmental, social, and economic benefits for present and future generations.
