About

Our Story

Mariners for Action (MFA) is dedicated to protecting marine ecosystems while promoting sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities. The organization addresses critical environmental challenges, such as sea turtle poaching and stranding, mangrove logging, destructive fishing practices, and marine plastic pollution, which threaten marine biodiversity and community well-being. MFA fosters community engagement and sustainable resource use through programs like Sea Turtle Conservation, Mangrove Conservation, and Community Exchange. Additionally, MFA’s Youth Innovation program empowers young people to develop independent solutions and eco-friendly enterprises, creating new opportunities to address environmental challenges. Our theory of change focuses on addressing the root causes of environmental challenges through skill development and economic empowerment, enabling communities to reduce dependency on exploitative practices, restore ecosystems, and build resilience against environmental and economic challenges

Our Vision

We envision thriving marine ecosystems along the coast of Kenya, where local communities actively engage in conservation efforts and benefit from sustainable practices. Our goal is to foster a future where biodiversity flourishes, resources are managed sustainably, and the ocean remains balanced and healthy for generations to come. Through collaboration and innovation, we aim to empower coastal communities to contribute meaningfully to conservation initiatives and embrace sustainable livelihoods within Kenya’s blue economy

Our Values

Mariners for Action is built on a foundation of shared values that guide our work and partnerships:

  1. Biodiversity Preservation: We are committed to protecting and restoring marine biodiversity along the Kenyan coast and its unique ecosystems.
  2. Economic Empowerment: By promoting sustainable livelihoods, we support coastal communities in reducing dependence on exploitative practices and building resilient futures.
  3. Community-Centered Conservation: We prioritize the involvement of coastal communities, ensuring that conservation efforts are inclusive, collaborative, and aligned with their unique cultural and ecological needs.
  4. Collaboration and Partnerships: We foster strategic partnerships with local organizations, government bodies, and stakeholders along the Kenyan coast to strengthen collective action and drive sustainable change.
