The Sea Turtles Conservation initiative focuses on monitoring and protecting sea turtle nesting beaches along Kenya’s North Coast. In collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service , MFA has established community biodiversity monitoring teams to safeguard critical nesting sites and track turtle activity. By engaging local communities, the program fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility for preserving marine ecosystems.
In addition to these efforts, MFA conducts regular stranding patrols to rescue stranded turtles and document critical data on marine life. Community members are also actively involved in anti-poaching surveillance to protect sea turtles from illegal harvesting and ensure the security of nesting sites. These patrols and surveillance activities are vital in combating threats to sea turtles and preserving their populations.
Through community monitoring, MFA protects vital nesting sites and works closely with the Kenya Wildlife Service to implement effective conservation measures.
Additionally, education and awareness campaigns are conducted to involve local communities in conservation efforts, building knowledge and commitment toward protecting these endangered species.
