On 9th May 2026, we convened a Community Feedback and Strategy Workshop at the IOMe Innovation Centre in Mombasa , bringing together representatives from Beach Management Units (BMUs), community-based organizations, women and youth groups, government agencies, and partners from Mombasa, Kwale, and Kilifi counties.
The workshop provided a structured platform for dialogue on key coastal challenges and emerging opportunities. We engaged participants in discussions around youth leadership and entrepreneurship, digital financing solutions, smart environmental monitoring systems, aquaculture value chains, plastic waste management, and broader approaches to marine conservation and sustainable coastal livelihoods.
The convening brought together a strong network of partners including Junior Chamber International, Averis Systems, WAVU, BMG for Charity, United Pathways Organisation, Sote Hub, Africa Climate and Environment Foundation, and East & Southern Africa Ocean Resilience Alliance, alongside government representatives from Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Fisheries Service, and Kenya Maritime Authority.
Key issues raised by community stakeholders included the continued impact of unsustainable bottom trawling on marine ecosystems and small-scale fisher livelihoods. Participants also emphasized the importance of livelihood diversification, with strong interest in practical opportunities such as seaweed farming, aquaculture, and ecotourism as pathways for women and youth empowerment.
Another major concern highlighted was limited access to climate finance and the complex, costly licensing and approval processes that continue to slow down community-led initiatives along the coast. Stakeholders called for more streamlined systems and stronger support for grassroots innovation and enterprise development.
The workshop concluded with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration among partners and strengthen coordinated action toward sustainable coastal development. We were encouraged by the strong engagement and reaffirmed our commitment to advancing community-led solutions for marine conservation, climate action, and sustainable livelihoods across Kenya’s coastline.
